Giza Gazette is a compilation of archaeological events that have taken place on or around the Giza Plateau within the last 10 years or so. Hardly current by our standards but, considering the monuments are at least 4,500 years old, this is new news.

Keep in mind: these articles are factual (to the best of my knowledge). You know the saying: "Truth is sometimes stranger than fiction"

March 22, 1993 - Egypt, Giza Plateau, Great Pyramid
At 11:05 am German robotics engineer, Rudolf Gatenbrink, discovers an ancient secret 'door' in the Great Pyramid.

While exploring the so-called air-shafts in the King's Chamber for a proposed ventilation system, Gatenbrink gains access to the Queen's Chamber's air-shafts (that, unlike the air-shafts in the King's Chamber, don't extend to the outer face of the Pyramid).

After maneuvering Upuaut II – a $250,000 mini-robot used to crawl up the shafts – 200 ft. up the southern shaft, the hitherto rough hewn walls turned smooth, polished. Directly ahead he discovered the now infamous 'door' replete with metal fittings. Under the lower-right corner exists a gap beneath which the projected red laser of Upuaut II completely disappeared into darkness.

What lies behind the ancient polished door? Some (such as the current Director General of Giza) speculated a cache of scrolls and even a statue of Khufu (Cheops). But we may never know...

Shortly after Gatenbrink's discovery, he was banned by the Supreme Council of Antiquities from resuming exploration of the shafts and the 'door'...

FYI: In Riddle of the Sphinx you are able to send up a robot similar to Upuaut II. You control the robot from a remote control and view images sent back from the Cheoptronic. You'll be continuing Gatenbrink's work and possible opening the 'door' yourself!

1991 - 1993 - Egypt, Giza Plateau, Sphinx Enclosure
Independent egyptologist John Anthony West spear-heads an in-depth expedition of the Great Sphinx. Along with Dr. Robert Schoch–chief geologist and Professor of Geology at Boston University–and Thomas Dobecki–chief seismologist from Houston-based consulting firm McBride-Ratcliff & Associates–West and his team make amazing discovering... chambers and tunnels under the Great Sphinx!

After extensive geological and seismic surveys in the Sphinx enclosure, the team was convinced that:

the Sphinx was weathered not by wind, but rain–when heavy rains fell on the eastern Sahara, around the end of the last ice age. That places the original carving of the Sphinx at around 10,500 B.C., instead of the orthodox egyptologist's dating of c.2500 B.C.

What? An eight thousand year difference?

That would also mean that the Sphinx is not of Egyptian origin. If not the Egyptians, who carved the enigmatic statue? (cue Atlantians)

the Sphinx sits on several hitherto undiscovered tunnels and 'cavities'... including a large rectangular 'void' (chamber) 25 ft. below the Sphinx's haunches. (It's actually under the right paw.)

These findings have been universally accepted by geologists on the basis of scientific evidence. But not by traditional egyptologists who are less open to evidence that would crumble their very foundation.

Unfortunately, just as they found these monumental discoveries, West's work was terminated by the Director-General of Giza, Dr. Zahi Hawass. (See a pattern forming?)

Mystery of the Sphinx chronicling West's work was aired on NBC in 1993 and hosted by Charlton Heston. No doubt this mass-exposure only inflamed Hawass even more.

Rumors abound of Hawass secretly continuing work on the main chamber located by West and his team.

FYI: The Japanese team in 1988 (read below) also found a hollow tunnel under the Sphinx using ground penetrating radar. They found another 'hollow space' in front of the Sphinx's paws.

1988 - Egypt, Giza Plateau, Sphinx
Right shoulder of Sphinx falls off. Concern over deterioration is at its highest. Proposals to protect the Sphinx from further harm include:

Glass pyramid over the Sphinx Enclosure

Great wall to shield the Sphinx from wind, rain and sand

A Retractable ribbed sheath blanketing the statue.

Of course, it's worth noting that some of these suggestions were not taken seriously.

FYI: The restoration of the Sphinx was covered in an interesting article published in National Geographic magazine, April 1991, and was written by egyptologist Dr. Mark Lehner. This article also chronicles the extensive mapping and 3d super-imposition of Khafre's face onto the Sphinx.

1988 - Egypt, Giza Plateau, Great Pyramid
Professor Sakuji Yoshimura along with a team of Japanese scientists conduct experiments in the Queen's Chamber using electro-magnetic waves and radar equipment.

This high-tech approach yielded results similar to the French (1986, below). With the confirmation of a 'cavity'–some believe a hidden chamber possibly containing the treasures of Cheops–close to the French team's drillings, they found another large cavity behind the N-W wall of the inner Queen's Chamber and a 'tunnel'–possibly passageway–outside and to the south of the Great Pyramid.

Again, shortly after these intriguing discoveries, the Egyptian authorities stepped in and terminated Yoshimura's work.

All acute paranoia aside, it begs one to think 'they' ARE trying to hide something, aye?

1987 - Egypt, Giza Plateau, Sphinx
Secret passage is discovered in Sphinx. Unfortunately the find only revealed an early 20th century newspaper and shoes.

1986 - Egypt, Giza Plateau, Great Pyramid
French architects Gilles Dormion and Jean-Patrice Goidin obtain authorization from the Supreme Council of Antiquities to drill a series of minute holes into the west wall of the Queen's Chamber. The project, testing the theory of a hidden chamber behind the west wall, reveals a large cavity filled with unusually fine sand.

Before any further exploration could be attempted, their work was suspended and Dormion and Goidin have not been allowed to resume their work in the Great Pyramid since. <sigh>
