TROUBLESHOOTING ANSWERS

Windows

1c) The following are some troubleshooting tips for QuickTime that you may try.
TIP # 1

Step 1
Go to the START menu, then PROGRAMS and see if there is a "QuickTime" and/or "QuickTime for Windows" programs group.

Step 2
If there is a "QuickTime for Windows" group, select the "Uninstall QuickTime" option. (If you only have a "QuickTime" program group, go to Step 5.)

Step 3
Once Step 2 is completed, go to the "QuickTime" and select "Uninstall QuickTime" (not "Uninstall Everything").

Step 4
Reinstall the game. When QuickTime 4 installs, select "Full." Go to Step 5 when the installation is finished.

Step 5
Select SETTINGS from the START menu, then select CONTROL PANEL. Find the blue "Q" icon labeled "QuickTime."

Step 6
Double click on this icon and a window called "QuickTime Settings" will appear. Select "Sound Out" in the first pull-down menu.

Step 7
In the second pull-down menu called, "Choose a devise for playback:" select "Wave Out." (If you have more than one option called "Wave Out," try the one for Windows first. If this option doesn't work, try the one for your computer's sound card.)

Step 8
Exit back to your desktop and start your game.

TIP # 2

Here is another Quicktime setting you could change that may resolve the problem.

1) from the Windows Start menu, select 'Settings' then 'Control Panel'
2) Double-click on the 'QuickTime' control panel
3) From the pop-up list select 'Video Settings'
4) Click on the little check mark beside the 'Enable DCI' option to turn it off (the little check mark should disappear).

And if those options don't work, try turn off any options in the QuickTime Control Panel, just check the "Safe Mode (GDI Only)" in the "Video Settings" section.
[top]

TIP # 3

It may be a hardware acceleration problem. Your video card may be running too fast for the game.
Here is a way to change the settings.

1) Right-Click on the "My Computer" Icon on your desktop and select "Properties" from the drop-down list that appears
2) In the "System Properties" window that appears, select the "Performance" tab.
3) Select the "Graphics" button that appears within the window.
4) Move the "Hardware Acceleration" slider one notch to the left.
5) Select "OK" then "OK" again on the "System Properties" window.
6) Accept the computer's prompt to restart.
7) Restart the game, if the problem is persisting, follow through steps 1 - 6 again to reduce the Hardware Acceleration until the slider gets down to the last setting. [top]

TIP # 4

We have found that even after applying some of the fixes, some of our customers still experience Quicktime.qts Illegal Operation errors. By doing some testing we have found that by uninstalling all versions of Quicktime and using version 3.0.2, no error messages appear. If you like, you can download Quicktime version 3.02 using the link below. [top]

Download: Quicktime 3.02 (WINDOWS ONLY)

The file will unzip to the "C:\Windows\Temp" directory. Then Click on "Setup" to start the install.

2)

The sound skips or is distorted. What can I do?
A) Please change the following QuickTime settings to correct the sound problems:
1) From the Windows Start menu, select "Settings'" then "Control Panel"
2) Double-click on the "QuickTime" icon in the control panel (The icon will appear as a blue "Q")
3) From the drop-down list select "Sound Out"
4) In the second pull-down menu named, "Choose a device for playback:" select "Wave Out." [If you have more than one option named "Wave Out," try the one for Windows preferred device first. If this option doesn't work, try the one for your computer's sound card.]
5) Exit back to your desktop and start your game. [top]

Macintosh

1)

Just purchased the game and afraid to continue to use it. It altered the position of my control strip in system 9.0. What shoul I do?
A) Your control strip was repositioned because the game resizes your monitor to 640x480 during game play. To reposition the control strip, simply click on the handle of the strip and hold the OPTION KEY and move the strip wherever you like. If you would rather ROTS not resize your screen, start up the game and press the spacebar to show the interface. Then, DISABLE the checkbox for FULL SCREEN. You may still have to reposition your control strip the first time you change the setting, but after that it will stay put. [top]

2)

The Tape Player freezes on my machine (and it's a MAC). What can I do?
It most likely is the ATI drivers - disabling those fixes the freezing for most Mac users.

1) Go to Extensions Manager in the Control Panels
2) Choose "View as Items" from the menu bar
3) Scroll down until you see all the ATI drivers
4) Deselect all ATI Drivers and restart.

NOTE: You may optionally go directly into your Extensions folder in the system folder and do this.

After doing so, restart the game and it should not freeze at the tape player.

General

1)

During the "Loading" screen and upon quitting I get an error message reading "Not enough memory available for attempted operation." Why is this happening and what does it mean?
A) This may happen if, when the program tries to resize your monitor resolution to 640x480, the video card isn't compatible or doesn't have enough VRAM. Disregard the message and you will be able to play without any problem. [top]

2)

How many disks comprise the game? Mine came in a 4-disk jewel case, but contains only 3 disks. I hope I don't get halfway through the game & then be asked to "insert disk 4".
A) Riddle of the Sphinx is a 3 CD game. You DO NOT need 4 CDs to play. Unfortunately no one makes a 3 CD jewel case :) [top]

3)

I'm having a problem going from disc three to two. I get a prompt to go back to disc two. When I enter the disc in it doesn't read it correctly, and spits it back out prompting for disc two still. I've figured out that its my computer because i tried it in my friends and it worked fine. Is there anything I can do for this?
Does your computer have multiple CD-ROM drives? If so, try putting the CD in another drive. If not, it may be that the CD-ROM drive isn't getting enough time to read the CD. When it asks for the CD, put it in and wait for a few seconds before pressing OK. [top]

ANSWERS FOR FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Tent FAQ's

Q)

I have the correct combination, but I can't seem to open the combination lock. What am I doing wrong?
A) First of all, make sure you have the correct combination. Several people claiming they have it, don't. Secondly, you need to follow the directions on the lock package to the "T" :) This puzzle does work, but it has many steps and is not easy. [top]

Q)

I'm having trouble with the Tape Player locking up. What can I do?
<<< PATCH FIXES THIS!
A) Try one of the following:
1. If you're on Macintosh, try disabling your ATI drivers (using the Extensions Manager). This works on the Mac. If this doesn't solve your problem, go to step 2.
2. Take the tape, back away from the tape player and leave the tent. Reenter the tent and go directly to the tape player and insert the tape. This procedure works for most people.
3. QuickTime can sometimes cause freezes and we ask that to change the Sound Out from DirectSound to Wave Out as well as uncheck the enable DCI option in QuickTime or use the Safe Mode (GDI Only) option. This is a good thing to do anyway. [top]

Q)

I'm having trouble opening the combination lock or even finding the combination. Can you give me a hint?
BEWARE!!! This hint is about as close to telling you the answer and SPOILING the puzzle. Make certain you have exhausted all efforts before continuing.

Click on the typewriter tray to extend it outward. Click again to look closely at the note taped to the tray. The note reads:

R – Tape #3 – 0105
L – Artifacts Tape – 0223
R – Tape #1 – 0031

The first letter refers to a Right or Left rotation of the combination lock. The last set of numbers is the counter on the tape player.

Now, close the tray and click on the top drawer. Click on the sketchpad and examine it. Pickup both audio tapes and place in inventory. Close the top drawer and click on the middle drawer to open. Click on the scrapbook and look at the articles for background information. Click outside of the book to close the book and click on the handle to close the middle drawer. Click to open the bottom drawer and grab the audio tape. Place it in inventory. Close the drawer and back away. You are now looking at the desk. Click on the note sitting on the desk and read for background. Click outside of the note to put it back. Click on the letter opener and glasses. Now, click on the tape player and pickup the audio tape to the right of the player, sitting on the desk. Looking a close-up of the tape, Gil’s message to you, click on it to hold it. (If you click outside of the tape it will be put back to it’s original location.) Holding the tape, click the eject button on the tape player. Put the tape into the tape tray and it will close automatically. Click PLAY and increase the volume by moving the volume slider over to the right. If the tape is not rewound, press REWIND and then PLAY again. Listen to this tape for background. Afterward, click EJECT and click on the tape in the tape player tray to get a close-up of the tape. Click once more to hold the tape and place it in inventory.

In inventory, find Tape #3 and double-click hold. Place the tape in the tape tray. REWIND the tape to the beginning. Before playing click on the counter clear switch (just left of the leftmost counter number) to reset the counter.

Tape #3 (R): FASTFORWARD to 0105. Gil says, "Add the day number, plus the number of doves, plus the number of pidgeons."

The remaining tapes:

Artifacts Tape (L): FASTFORWARD to 0223. Gil says, "Add the number of young bulls to five; subtract the number of male goats."

Tape #1 (R):
FASTFORWARD to 0031. Gil says, "The number of years minus thirty."

(NOTE: Remember to reset counter to zero and REWIND for each tape before playing.)

This is Gil’s clue to solving one of the combination numbers. Back away from the desk and turn around until you're facing the cot. Click on the green tin box to go closer, and click again to open. Click on Gil’s wallet and take out all of the cards on the left side. Behind the card second from the bottom is a small scrap of paper. Pull it up and into view. The note reads:

R – 6:10
L – 15:24
R – 8:25

The first letter refers to a Right or Left rotation of the combination lock. The last set of numbers are bible verses. Click outside of the wallet to put it away and click outside of the tin box to back away from the cot. Turn right and click on the candle. Now, click on the set of books in the crate below the candle. Click on any of the books to read its contents for background and clues. When finished, click on the Holy Bible. You are in the Book of "Numbers." Turn to chapter 6, verse 10.

Verse 6:10 (R) - Using Gil’s clue on the tape, the verse yields this equation: Day Number + Doves + Pidgeons

The remaining tapes:

Verse 15:24 (L) - Young Bulls + 5 – Male Goats

Verse 8:25 (R) - Number of Years – 30

You need to follow the instructions on back of the lock package to properly unlock this particular lock. Back away from the cot and turn until you are facing the boxes of supplies in the corner of the tent. Click closer twice and click on the lock package sitting on top of the open box. Turn the package around to read the instructions.

- Tumble (when the cursor shows a T) the lock several times to reset the combination or clear the tumbler.
- Next (when the cursor shows an R), turn the dial to the right until you land on the first number of the combination.
- Now (if the cursor shows an L), turn the dial to the left, one full revolution PAST the first number, to the second number.
- Lastly (and if the cursor shows an R), turn the dial to the right to the last number. [top]

Q)

I'm having trouble stricking the match. What am I doing wrong?
A) Hold the match on the left side of the strike plate, then hold the mouse down and drag the match across the strike plate. [top]

Q)

I can't open the desk drawer in the tent. Is this a bug?
A) This is not a bug. You will need the key hidden in the tent. If you can't find the key look for a clue near the pillow and candle. [top]
